The Application Process
The Telecommunicator application process is extensive by design. It is our duty to ensure that the teams we build are up to this challenging task. The following explains, in brief detail, our complete hiring process. Applicants will need to be available for each portion of the testing process. Expect the complete application process to take up to three months before an offer of employment can be made.
The order of the process is at the discretion of the Communications Division staff.
Applications and resumes can be submitted through www.montcopa.org/jobs. Candidates who were a part of the previous recruiting session but did not make it all the way through the process, must start over. This includes resubmission of an application, resume, and re-testing.
CritiCall Testing
CritiCall testing simulates the job skills necessary to be a successful Telecommunicator. Applicants will have the opportunity to take the test after submitting a resume and/or application. Testing could take up to two hours to complete. Practice tests will be available before each module on the CritiCall site.
After the test, each candidate will be advised of their test results.
Pre-Interview Questions
Applicants who pass the test will be asked to participate in a brief interview.
Personal History Questionnaire
Instructions to complete an extensive Personal History Questionnaire (PHQ) will be sent to candidates. All sections must be filled out and returned by the required date.
Job Shadowing
When the Communications Center environment permits, job shadowing will be scheduled for those who have successfully completed all steps listed above. This will allow candidates to observe a seasoned Telecommunicator.
Oral Interview with Selection Panel
Interviews will be scheduled for those continuing in the process.
Background Investigation/Reference Check
An extensive background investigation will be conducted including reference checks. This process can take between two to three weeks to complete, depending on the number of prospective employees.
Conditional Offer Letter
A conditional offer of employment will be extended to those selected for the available positions. Letters will be sent in a timely fashion to ensure ample time to extend a proper two-week notice to any employers.
Drug Screening/Physical Examination
Between receipt of the conditional offer and the beginning of academy training, candidates will be required to complete a medical and/or psychological exam. Candidates must successfully pass a pre-employment physical, including a drug screening. Job duties deemed typical for a telecommunicator will factor into the physical examination.
Offer of Employment
Candidates who are given an offer of employment will be given the following information:
- A written offer of employment
- An offer of employment expiration date
- Information explaining the one-year probationary period that is required for the position following completion of entry level classroom training.
Probationary status should not be construed as a contract or guarantee of employment. Montgomery County is an at will employer.
Ineligible candidates will be informed in writing within thirty days after the application process closes.
